School Activities @ Wee Waa High SchoolReflecting the broad range of students ability and interest, Wee Waa High has a vast range of activities that go on, ranging from chess clubs to choir and hockey to horse sports. A brief overview of the major activities that go on at the High School are described below. CompetitionsStudents at the High School participate in a wide range of competitions. Achieving good results in national as well as local events, competitions participated in annually include the Wee Waa Show, the Australian Science Competition, Australian English Competition, Australian Mathematics Competition, Australasian Business Studies Competition, Australasian Computer Skills Competition and many others. The Australian Stock Exchange School's Competition is an event many students enjoy participating in, frequently making an excellent return on their simulated investments with some students making it in to the top 10% of Australia. Debating and Mock Trial competitions are areas that the school has started participating in 2006, with students wetting their teeth in the challenging areas. Having had a very positive experience in 2006, the teams should grow stronger and do even better in 2007. DramaDramatic performance is an area that is growing at the school, with the 2006 production of Cinderella involving about twenty students. Other acts also partake in Gala Night, always impressing the audience and demonstrating the ability of the students to suceed. Homework CentreOperating two nights a week, the school has a Homework Centre and Senior Homework Centre. Running from 3:30pm to 4:30pm on Tuesday, the Homework Centre is part of the support structure available to all students and can provide a great deal of assistance to students as both teachers and library/computer resources are available. The Senior Homework Centre is available to all students in Years 10 to 12 and operates from 6pm to 8pm on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Teacher's are available to assist students in completing homework, assignments or in revision. Music: Band and ChoirThe Band and Choir continue to grow each year under the careful guidance of Ms Conroy. Frequently performing in the local community as well as participating in musical competitions, the band and choir seem to be going from strength to strength. The highlight event is the Gala Night where singers, dancers, dramatic performances and musicians demonstrate quality acts before a substantial audience. SportAs part of the "Sportiest Shire in Australia", Wee Waa High engages in an enormous range of sporting activites. Horse Sports traditionally does exceptionally well, however Soccer and Football teams nearly always make it in to the final rounds of competitions. Individual athletes often attend State competitions and achieve admirable results. Student Representative CouncilStudents are elected to the SRC by their peers (their year group except for captain/vice-captains who are elected by the whole school). Meeting every Tuesday at lunchtime and guided by Mrs Booby, the SRC organises socials, fund raisers and novelty events throughout the year as well as providing a link between the student body and school executive. |
